BLT with Fried Green Tomatoes

Fried green tomatoes are a old-fashion southern side, made nationally recognized by the book and film of the same name. This recipe takes a lighter, more modern spin on the often heavy dish.


  1. Large Green Tomato, slightly soft, sliced thick (slice into about 3-4 slices, discarding ends)
  1. 1c all purpose flour
  1. 1/2c panko bread crumbs
  1. 1tbls onion powder
  1. 3tbls sunflower oil
  1. pinch salt
  1. 2 strips Bacon (vegan), cooked
  1. 1 piece butter lettuce
  1. 1 large piece sourdough bread, toasted
  1. Vegenaise (to taste)


Heat oil to frying temperature in a non-stick skillet. Combine dry ingredients. Lightly dredge both sides of each tomato slice, one at a time. Add tomatoes to hot oil and brown on both sides. Slice toasted sourdough in half and assemble BLT in the usual way.
